The Friends of the Baxter County Library's quarterly book sale will be held in the Library meeting room of the main Library, located at 424 W. 7th Street in Mountain Home, on Thursday, May 15th, from 8:30am to 6:30pm, Friday, May 16th, from 8:30am to 5:00pm, and Saturday, May 17th, from 8:30am to 2:00pm. Enjoy bargain books on a variety of subjects plus music and videos. On Saturday from 8:30am til noon, items are reduced to half-price; from noon to 2pm, you may fill a grocery bag with your choice of items for only $1.00. All book sale proceeds benefit the Library. 05/17 BCL Tour de Libre
Tour de Libre, a bicycle fun ride to benefit the Baxter County Library Foundation, is scheduled for Saturday, May 17th in Mountain Home, Arkansas. The event is for all age groups and skill levels. The race begins and ends at the ASUMH Campus, across from the site of the new Library. There are three ride options: a bi-state metric century of 62 miles; a 30 mile; and a 12 mile (children age 12 & over can ride the 12 mile option accompanied by an adult). A Kid's Tour for all ages will follow the morning races. Participants can register online at www.baxtercountylibrary.org, and view course maps, starting times, entry fees, detailed directions, and t-shirt ordering information. May Blood Drives
In recent years, summer months have been particularly difficult on the community's blood supply and the Red Cross urges everyone to donate blood and save a life. Donors of all blood types are encouraged to give. Fewer than 8% of the healthy, able population who can donate, actually do and there is a constant need for blood. Every day the red Cross must meet the blood needs of accident victims, sickle cell anemia patients, premature babies, cancer patients, and many others in hospitals throughout the region. Anyone who is at least 17 years of age, weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good general health is urged to try to donate this month. People who have never given blood, and repeat donors are encouraged to donate now. Donors should eat a good meal and drink extra water before giving blood. All persons must have a photo I.D. 05/09 Benefit Concert
A benefit concert for Gamma House, a shelter for women & children, will be held at East Side Baptist Church, located at 718 East 9th Street in Mountain Home, on Friday, May 9th, at 7:00pm. The concert is for all ages and will feature the Naylor Family Band of Guthrie, OK as they share their unique blend of praise and worship, celtic, and folk (with a bluegrassy sort of flare). 05/10 MHBC Car Show
The entire community is invited to attend Miracle on the Mountain Car Show and Shine in the parking lot of Mountain Home Baptist Church, located at 1960 Glenbriar - just off the Sheid-Hopper by-pass - in Mountain Home on Saturday, May 10th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. There will be free hotdogs, cold drinks, and chocolate chip cookies. Music from the 50's, 60's, and 70's will be played throughout the event. At 2:00pm a 1927 T Bucket will be completely assembled from the frame up and driven off the parking lot. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles are welcome to participate. People will vote for their favorite in each division and awards will be given out. Door prizes will be awarded to those who enter a vehicle. Registration is free and vehicles should arrive to be parked between 9:00 - 9:45am. This event is free to the community as a gift from Mountain Home Baptist Church. The Mountain View Garden Club will be hosting the "Music in Bloom" Garden Tour on Saturday, May 17th, from 10:00am to 4:00pm. This self-guided tour will feature six gardens i the Mountain View area. The event will be sponsored by the Citizens Bank, KWOZ and Ozark Folk Center. Advance tickets for the event will be $8.00 and will be available at the following Mountain View locations: The Citizens Bank and Wilson's Town & Country, beginning May 10th. The Baxter County Library will host a brown bag book discussion of "The Best Lawyer in a One Lawyer Town", the memoir of former Arkansas Governor and U.S. Senator Dale Bumpers, on Tuesday, May 20th, from noon to 1:00pm. Moderator John Beecroft, retired history teacher, describes the selection: "Senator Bumpers' biography is one of the best books on small time life in rural Arkansas. He has an excellent sense of humor mostly at his own expense. Bumpers is an outstanding storyteller and an exceptional political figure." Copies of the book are available now at the Library for checkout. Participants are invited to bring their own brown bag lunch, and drinks and cookies will be provided. Doors open at 11:30am. The Izard County Veterans Park in Melbourne will be the site of a Memorial Day ceremony to be held Saturday, May 24th, beginning at 11:00am. The program will include patriotic music, colors posted, pledge, 21 gun salute by the Melbourne VFW, taps, prayers and more. Faith Assembly of God and the H2O Children's Ministry department want your Kindergarten through Sixth Graders to join us every Monday, beginning June 9th for Summer Blast.
